🗓️ Day 1: Arrival – Anuradhapura Ancient City & Mihintale Exploration

Upon arrival at Colombo International Airport, begin your journey north to Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka’s first royal capital and one of the most revered cities in Buddhist history. Located around 220 km from Colombo, this UNESCO World Heritage Site served as the island’s capital from the 4th century BCE to the 11th century CE.

Discover a sprawling complex of ruins, stupas, monasteries, and ancient reservoirs, covering over 40 square kilometers. Notable sites include the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi Tree (a sapling of the original Bodhi Tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment), Ruwanwelisaya Stupa, and Jetavanaramaya, one of the tallest brick structures in the ancient world.

Later, visit Mihintale, the cradle of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. This tranquil hilltop sanctuary is believed to be where Buddhism was first introduced to the island by Mahinda Thero. Climb a stone stairway lined with lush greenery to reach breathtaking viewpoints and ancient relics.

Travel to the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka’s second royal capital and another UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Walk through an open museum of well-preserved ruins and relics including:

  • The Royal Palace complex
  • Lankatilaka Vihara and Thuparama Dagoba
  • The remarkable Gal Vihara — Buddha statues in seated, standing, and reclining postures carved into solid rock


After your cultural immersion, enjoy an afternoon jeep safari at Minneriya or Kaudulla National Park, depending on seasonal elephant migration patterns. These parks are known for their large gatherings of wild elephants, especially around the reservoirs during the dry season.

In the late afternoon, head to Sigiriya and climb the magnificent Sigiriya Rock Fortress. This 5th-century architectural wonder, built by King Kassapa, stands atop a 200-meter-high rock with elaborate water gardens, frescoes, and panoramic views that will leave you in awe.

Start your day with a visit to the Dambulla Cave Temple, a sacred pilgrimage site boasting more than 150 Buddha statues and intricate murals spread across five caves. These centuries-old artworks represent the evolution of Buddhist culture and artistry over 2,000 years and offer sweeping views of the surrounding countryside.

Continue your journey through Matale, where you can stop at a traditional spice garden to learn about the herbs and spices that shaped Sri Lankan cuisine and Ayurveda.

Arrive in Kandy, nestled among misty hills and rich with cultural heritage. Spend the evening at leisure or explore the town’s colonial charm and lakeside serenity.

Discover the sacred city of Kandy, home to the revered Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa). This temple houses the Buddha’s tooth and is one of the holiest places of worship for Buddhists around the world.
Wander through the temple’s intricate shrines, traditional architecture, and spiritual ambiance.
If time permits, explore other local attractions such as:
